Sixteen-year-old cellist Philip Jeong has emerged as one of the most promising young talents of his generation, recognized for his depth of expression, poised stage presence, and heartfelt dedication to sharing the beauty of music. He began his cello studies at the age of nine and made his solo debut only three years later at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, a milestone that marked the beginning of his blossoming career as both a performer and musical storyteller. Since then, Philip has captivated audiences as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra, the Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra, and the Gwinnett County Youth Symphony Orchestra, having won each orchestra’s concerto competition. His musical voice has also been featured in performances at Morgan Concert Hall at Kennesaw State University as winner of the MTNA Senior String Competition and MTNA Junior String Competition, and at Carlos Museum Ackerman Hall at Emory University, where he appeared as an invited Atlanta Young Artist for the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta Family Concert. Philip’s artistry has been recognized on both national and international stages. He is a multiple winner of concerto and international music competitions held across the United States, Canada, Italy, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. As a result of these honors, he has been invited to perform in some of the world’s most distinguished venues, including the Beethoven House in Bonn, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Teatro Studio, Parco della Musica in Rome. Each performance reflects not only his technical mastery but also his emotional connection to the music, which continues to inspire audiences of all ages. Philip currently studies with Ms. Ji Young Lee and Dr. James Kim, and previously trained under Mr. Lluís Claret and Dr. Jesús Castro-Balbi. He has participated in esteemed programs such as the Heifetz Institute Summer Program and the Music@Menlo Chamber Music Festival and Institute, where he has worked closely with world-renowned artists. His musical education has been enriched through masterclasses and coaching sessions with exceptional musicians including Arnaud Sussmann, Tommaso Lonquich, members of the American String Quartet, and numerous others such as Stella Chen, Paul Huang, Kristin Lee, Paul Neubauer, Dmitri Atapine, Christine Walevska, Nicholas Canellakis, Sihao He, David Requiro, Hyeyeon Park, and Wu Qian, among many others. A passionate chamber musician, Philip values the unique dialogue and collaboration that ensemble playing brings. As a member of the Emory Youth Chamber Program, under the mentorship of the Vega String Quartet, he performed extensively throughout the region. His ensemble, the Enchant Trio—with violinist Claire Cho and pianist Nathan Liu—has performed at Spivey Hall and at the Nacoochee Cultural Center in North Georgia, showcasing their shared commitment to artistic excellence and communication through music. Philip has also been featured in the celebrated “CelloMania” concert series at the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival’s 41st Season, performing alongside world-class cellists Sara Sant’Ambrogio, Jesús Castro-Balbi, Guang Wang, Charae Krueger, Martin Gueorguiev, and Khari Joyner. His memorable performance of Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with soprano Bethany Mamola at Cannon Chapel for the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta was met with great enthusiasm. He has also been invited to collaborate with acclaimed cellist Zuill Bailey in the upcoming “CelloMania” concert series at the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival in 2024. Beyond his solo and chamber performances, Philip continues to contribute to his school’s vibrant musical community as principal cellist at Phillips Academy Andover, where he leads his peers with artistry, humility, and a spirit of collaboration. Philip’s musical journey reflects not only a pursuit of technical excellence but also a profound belief in the power of music to connect hearts and transcend boundaries. Through every performance, he seeks to share the warmth, hope, and humanity that music embodies.
